What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which individuals acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Our SEL Goals:

  • Emotional Awareness: Help students recognize and understand their own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. Encourage self-reflection and self-awareness to promote emotional intelligence.
  • Relationship Skills: Provide opportunities for students to develop and maintain positive relationships with peers, teachers, family members, and the broader community. Foster empathy, communication skills, and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Resilience and Coping Strategies: Equip students with resilience-building skills and coping strategies to effectively navigate challenges, setbacks, and stressors. Promote positive mental health and well-being.
  • Decision Making: Empower students to make responsible and ethical decisions by teaching critical thinking skills, problem-solving techniques, and goal-setting strategies.
  • Community and Global Citizenship: Foster a sense of belonging and social responsibility by encouraging students to actively participate in their school, local community, and global society. Promote values such as inclusivity, respect, and civic engagement.

SEL Resources and Activities:

  • Curriculum Integration: Incorporate SEL principles and practices into classroom instruction across various subject areas. Explore SEL-aligned lesson plans, activities, and discussion topics to enhance students' social and emotional skills.
  • Group Workshops and Activities: Offer group workshops, seminars, and activities focused on specific SEL competencies, such as mindfulness, stress management, self-esteem building, and conflict resolution.
  • Peer Support Programs: Implement peer mentoring programs, buddy systems, or support groups to provide students with opportunities for peer-to-peer support and mentorship.
  • Counseling Services: Collaborate with school counselors and mental health professionals to provide individual and group counseling services for students in need of additional support.
  • Parent and Community Engagement: Engage parents, caregivers, and community members in SEL initiatives through workshops, presentations, and family events. Foster collaboration between home, school, and community to support students' social and emotional development.

Get Involved in SEL:

  • Student Leadership Opportunities: Join our SEL student leadership team or clubs dedicated to promoting positive school culture and student well-being.
  • SEL Events and Campaigns: Participate in SEL-themed events, campaigns, and awareness days throughout the school year. Stay connected and involved in promoting a positive and supportive school environment.

At Carlinville Middle School, we are committed to fostering a culture of social emotional learning and supporting the holistic development of every student. Together, we can empower our students to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially, both inside and outside the classroom. Join us in promoting a positive school climate where every student feels valued, respected, and supported on their journey to success.
